The hooks are baited, and the lines are cast, as organizers gear up for another Family Fishing Derby season. To allow families a break after the busy holidays, the event is set for a later date of January 15 at Horseshoe Lake. This year marks the Fourth Annual Family Fishing Derby for Kids with Cancer and, as always, will be raising funds for local children across the Kootenays.

Keep the whole family entertained at an outdoor day all ages will enjoy. In addition to the main ice-fishing competition, look forward to door prizes, women’s ski jumping, a silent auction, and 50/50 draw. Kids, get excited to participate in milk-jug bowling, snow paint, tug-o-war, hat trick games, toboggan races, and hockey with the Kimberley Dynamiters.

Get creative before the event, and participate in the Best Dressed Dog and Best Dressed Toboggan contests. Enjoy a sleigh ride with Fort Steele Clydesdales, or a sled ride with Adrenaline Dog Tours. With this abundance of activities, those taking part will work up an appetite for the chilli, hot dogs, hot chocolate, coffee and treats available by donation.

Thanks to the terrific support from local businesses, the Family Fishing Derby has consistently been able to offer fantastic prizes and auction items. First prize for the biggest fish is a 16ft Jon Fishing Boat and Trailer generously donated by FAB-RITE Services. There is also the opportunity for one child with cancer to win a trip to Disneyland with their family. For the third consecutive year, a draw will be made at the derby to send a deserving family to the place where dreams come true. This is made possible courtesy of Dacota Freight along with $1,000 vacation spending money from the Family Fishing Derby.

Cancer touches the lives of too many, and the Family Fishing Derby wants to fight back. Last year was a tremendous success thanks to overwhelming community support reeling in close to 2,000 participants and raising $21,000. All of the proceeds benefit local children battling cancer with partial proceeds supporting child cancer support programs with the Canadian Cancer Society and B.C. Friends of Children.

Tickets are available in Cranbrook at Barbers’ On Ninth and Mountain Man Outdoors, in Kimberley at Black Bear Books and Video, in Fernie at Extra Foods, and at the Fort Steele RV Park. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and seniors, and are excellent stocking stuffers for this holiday season.

For tickets, information, or to donate, please contact the familyfishingderby@gmail.com or visit www.familyfishingderby.com. Fight back and join the fun on January 15, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Horseshoe Lake. A Kootenay-wide event focused on celebrating family fun while helping children in need, the family fishing derby really is all about the kids.
