The City recently erected signs renaming “312th Street” to “Jim Ogilvie Way”, to honour long-serving former Mayor James E. Ogilvie. Known as “Jim” to most, Jim made an immense contribution to the people of Kimberley over six decades and 46 years in local politics.

“He loves this community and it is the least we can do to recognize his service and dedication,” said Mayor Ron McRae. “The road connects Marysville and Kimberley, which is appropriate for Jim.”

Mr. Ogilvie first served as Commissioner for the Village of Marysville in 1965 and then as Alderman during the 1968 amalgamation of the City of Kimberley with the villages of Chapman Camp and Marysville. Mr. Ogilvie was instrumental in the transition period of Marysville and Kimberley during the amalgamation and continued the journey toward economic independence and continued prosperity for Kimberley.

In 1972, Jim successfully ran for Mayor of Kimberley. With a break of only three years, Jim Ogilvie served the City of Kimberley for an impressive period of 36 years as Mayor. During these years, the City flourished with his guidance including the transformation of the City of Kimberley into the Bavarian City of the Rockies. “Moving from an industrial based economy to a tourism based economy was inevitable knowing that the Sullivan Mine would eventually close one day”, stated Mayor McRae.

“The road that has been named after him served many Cominco operations during his political career. We hope the recognition to rename this important street in our community is perceived as one of his highest achievements,” commented Mayor McRae.

Jim has received many awards and recognitions for his achievements over the years, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and the Order of B.C. in 2012.

Family and friends of Jim Ogilvie are invited to attend a photo-op and small ceremony at the corner of Jim Ogilvie Way and Rotary Drive, starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8th. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, Kimberley Alpine Resort Multi-purpose Room.
